Summer Reading for Men

Manspeak encourages men to read by suggesting four books as potential reads this summer. Let me suggest three others.

The Match: The Day the Game of Golf Changed Forever by Mark Frost

Frost, who also wrote The Greatest Game Ever Played, writes another excellent book. In this book a bet sparks a golf match between four of the best American golfers ever to play the game: Ken Venturi, Harvie Ward, Ben Hogan, and Byron Nelson. I was especially inspired by the testimony of Bryon Nelson.

Band of Brothers, by Stephen Ambrose

I read the book before seeing the HBO miniseries. I recommend both, but read the book first. Ambrose is very proficient at retelling history with enthralling passion, especially through the judicious use of firsthand accounts. An inspiring account of courage and camaraderie. I would also recommend Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. The success of this amazing trip and the ultimate self-destruction of one of the primary men in the trip makes this a great life lesson. Read it before HBO and National Geographic come out with their miniseries, supposedly coming out in 2008.

Enjoy an inspiring book this summer!
