New “Lord of the Rings” movie out in May

No, The Hobbit will not be released until 2012.  But a fan has made his own, not-for-profit, free movie to be released online on May 3, 2009 by Independent Online Cinema.

‘The Hunt For Gollum’ is a ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Fan Film made by fans for fans. Inspired by notes in the appendices from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ book, ‘The Hunt For Gollum’ follows Aragon as he sets out to find the creature Gollum and discover the truth about the Ring…”

I have watched “The Hunt for Gollum” movie trailer and it looks pretty good. Where does this story come from? The Hunt for Gollum website describes it in this way:

The script is adapted from elements of the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. The story follows the Heir of Isildur; the “greatest huntsman and traveller in Middle Earth” as he sets out to find the creature Gollum. The creature must be found to discover the truth about the Ring, and to protect the future Ringbearer.

Tolkien was a master not just of the story but of everything surrounding the story. If you study his appendices at the end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy you will see almost 140 pages (in my 1965 copyright Ballantine Books edition) of background, timelines, family trees, etc. on Middle Earth. In Appendix B (page 463) Tolkien describes the search for Gollum in the year 3009 of the third age and then again in the year 3017. So these Tolkien fans are working off of actual elements in the appendices.

I am looking forward to this movie! Check out the trailer below.
